Project background

Brief
Inner West Council’s Marrickville Library & Pavilion is located on the site of the old Marrickville Hospital. The architectural design has restored and retained part of the old hospital and added a large new building with an impressive folded roof design.

The brief from the Inner West Council was to create a signage and wayfinding system that reflected the community and the area of Marrickville, that functioned effectively for a library environment and responded to the architecture.

Solution
To balance the need to support the user journey between the old and new buildings with a  heightened presence of signage, the design was intentionally lighter in style in order not to overwhelm the light and bright architectural spaces. The signage form was inspired by the  strongest architectural feature of the building, the new roof. For us, the zig-zag also represented the letter ‘M’ in abstract form. Bespoke typography was developed that reflected these angles. Isometric mapping provided a playful element that engaged audiences for the launch of the building.
