Bay Pavilions Arts + Aquatics provides the Batemans Bay catchment with a premier venue for culture, arts, and physical and mental well-being.
The Pavilions project is made up of two core destinations – the Arts Pavilion and the Aquatic Pavilion and features an arts and cultural centre with 350 seat theatre, indoor aquatics facilities, a water park, gym, group fitness, and wellness areas.
The co-locating of the experiences delivered operational efficiencies for Council, but did raise some challenges to ensure audiences understood the offerings. The solution developed by Citizen was to recognise the two halves ‘Arts’ and ‘Aquatics’ and to leverage the nature of the architecture to develop the name ‘Bay Pavilions’. The name ‘Bay Pavilions’ neatly combines the multiple zones within the precinct and inspires a sense of ownership for the wider Bay catchment.
Citizen held several community workshops to arrive at the venue name and also worked through naming for experiences within. The work was also on public display where Citizen designed a pop-up for the local shopping centre so that locals could stop by and ask questions about the project.
The branding and graphics schemes were inspired by the region – dynamic circular forms reflecting the natural coastline and water movement. The organic shapes form the basis of the scheme, while the bright and dynamic colour palette inspires excitement for the 'entertainment' amenity the precinct delivers.
